Only products with the letters “KN” following the Better If Used Before Date are included in the recall. Products with a “KM” designation are NOT included in the recall. In addition, no products in Canada are affected.

Salmonella is an organism, which [...]]]> Five Crowns Marketing, Brawley, California is issuing this release today voluntarily recalling cantaloupes packed under the Majesty label because of a potential health risk due to possible contamination of Salmonella. No illnesses have been reported to date, and the company is working with FDA to inform consumers of this recall.

Salmonella is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Consumers who may have eaten this product and are experiencing the above symptoms should consult their health care provider.

The recall comes after a Lab analysis conducted by a consignee on a lot of cantaloupes packed by Five Crowns Marketing on November 4, 2009, resulted in a confirmed positive for Salmonella. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution Five Crowns Marketing is issuing this warning and voluntary recall on all cantaloupes shipped from the same lot.

Five Crowns Marketing traced back the entire lot of cantaloupes and is advising all customers who received the recalled cantaloupes. Although based on harvest and shipping dates from November 4 through November 13, 2009 would indicate that the cantaloupes have now passed through the distribution chain with no reported illnesses. The cantaloupes in the identified lots were harvested and shipped to wholesalers, retailers, and food service operators in the states of Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.

Cantaloupes were packed in various sizes with and without individual label stickers. All cartons carry the label “Majesty” and are further identified with lot numbers 198 2 or 198 3, packed dates Nov 4, Nov 6, and Nov 10. Also those cantaloupes that contain stickered labels are identified with the label “Majesty”.

The health of all consumers is of the utmost importance to Five Crowns Marketing. With that in mind, even though the cantaloupes have passed through the distribution chain, we have taken immediate action to ensure that all cantaloupes are accounted for and out of the supply chain. We are working with all of our customers to insure that the cantaloupes are no longer being distributed.

The [...]]]> Curly’s Food, Inc., a Sioux City, Iowa, establishment, is recalling approximately 12,181 pounds of roast beef deli products because they were inadvertently mislabeled and contain an undeclared allergen, soy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. Soy is a known potential allergen, which is not declared on the label.

The following product is subject to recall:

• Cases containing two (2) various size weight deli-faced pieces of “Healthy Ones, Medium Cooked Roast Beef, 97% Fat Free, No Fillers, No Artificial Flavors, Lower Sodium” in vacuum packaged bags. Each package bears a use by date of “01/03/2010″ or “01/10/2010,” a case code of “30900-17856″ as well as the establishment number “EST. 15878″ inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The roast beef deli products were produced on October 5 and 12, 2009, and were distributed to retail-type delicatessens and Department of Defense Commissaries in California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

The problem was discovered by the company following a product check. FSIS has received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an allergic reaction should contact a physician.

FSIS became aware of the problem during the course of an investigation of a cluster of E. coli O157:H7 [...]]]> Fairbank Farms, an Ashville, NY, establishment, is recalling approximately 545,699 pounds of fresh ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

FSIS became aware of the problem during the course of an investigation of a cluster of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses. Working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health and agriculture departments, FSIS determined that there is an association between the fresh ground beef products subject to recall and illnesses in Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts. FSIS is continuing to work with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Connecticut Department of Public Health, other state health and agriculture departments and the CDC on the investigation. Anyone with signs or symptoms of foodborne illness should consult a physician.

Wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry. Wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot, soapy water. Immediately clean spills.

Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods.

Consumers should only eat ground beef or ground beef patties that have been cooked to a safe internal temperature of 160° F, whether prepared from fresh or frozen raw meat products.

Color is NOT a reliable indicator that ground beef or ground beef patties have been cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria such as E. coli O157:H7.

The only way to be sure ground beef is cooked to a high enough temperature to kill harmful bacteria is to use a thermometer to measure the internal temperature.
